AI Agents and the New Economy of Digital Assets
BlackRock's report suggests AI could become a significant source of demand for digital assets, particularly stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets. Adoption of these autonomous agents is still in its initial stages.
BlackRock's recent publication introduces a new perspective on the world of digital assets, suggesting that artificial intelligence (AI) could become an important source of demand. The report titled 'Machine-Native Economy' proposes that autonomous AI agents, capable of performing complex tasks with minimal human intervention, will need to buy data, pay for services, and rent computing power. According to BlackRock, banks and card networks were built around people, accounts, and manual confirmations. However, the firm argues that stablecoins and other blockchain assets are better suited for the small, round-the-clock payments these autonomous agents would make. The report mentions stablecoins, native cryptocurrencies, and tokenized real-world assets as potential investment instruments. Additionally, the idea of tokenized computing capacity is proposed as an additional concept. The relevance of this analysis lies in its focus on payment mechanisms rather than price speculation. Stablecoins are the most direct fit for these agents because they provide a predetermined unit of account. However, it's important to note that adoption of this technology is still in early stages. Analysts like TechFlow have observed that this idea is not new to the crypto space and current blockchain data do not clearly indicate the real volume of such transactions. BlackRock acknowledges that payments by autonomous agents are at an early stage.
