Argentina Reports Second Quarter Economic Growth Driven by Export-Oriented Sectors
Argentina reported second quarter GDP growth of 2% compared to the same period last year, driven by export-oriented sectors such as fishing and mining. However, challenges persist with a decline in manufacturing and reduced investments impacting overall economic performance.
The latest report from the National Statistics and Censuses Institute (Indec) of Argentina indicates a 2% growth in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) compared to the same period last year, despite a 0.6% contraction for the current quarter. This growth was largely driven by the fishing sector, which expanded by 44.7%, followed closely by mining and quarrying activities with an increase of 16.4%. The agricultural sector also contributed positively, seeing a rise in production of 6.9%. However, the manufacturing industry faced a decline of 2.1%, while construction advanced only 0.2%. Private and public consumption decreased by 2.4% and 2.3%, respectively, amid economic constraints. In the external sector, exports grew by 13.7% year-over-year, whereas imports fell by 8.6%. This result contrasts with a 0.6% GDP contraction in the first three months of the year, reflecting ongoing challenges for economic management. Argentina's economy continues to adapt to a volatile global context where export sectors are crucial for maintaining positive growth, but also face internal pressures from domestic demand and investment declines.
