Australian Dollar in Discord: USD’s Dominance and the Response to Rate Hike
The Australian dollar is under pressure due to the strength of the US dollar and the reaction to the RBA's rate hike. The 200-day moving average acts as resistance for AUDUSD, indicating a downward trend.
The Australian dollar (AUD) is currently facing significant pressure amid investor adjustments following expectations of a rate hike by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). The RBA's decision to increase rates to 4.60% was not enough to reverse the decline in AUDUSD since its peak in September. This dynamic primarily stems from the strength of the US dollar, resulting from an increase in US interest rates due to expectations of a hawkish stance by the Federal Reserve (Fed). The technical analysis has been cloudy with sellers dominating around the 200-day moving average. Last week, AUDUSD fell below this key level, indicating a short-term downward trend. Meanwhile, buyers have shown some resistance around the 61.8% retracement at 0.7007 but have not managed to maintain an upward momentum over that and the 200-day moving average. This situation reinforces the view that sellers currently hold the upper hand in the market, with a risk of further significant declines to levels like 0.69619 or even back to the June low at 0.68655 if negative conditions persist. The downward trend remains as long as prices stay below these key levels. This suggests that for a real reversal, the Australian dollar will need to overcome and maintain both the 61.8% retracement and the 200-day moving average. The dynamics in the market show an imbalance between buying and selling forces that warrant close attention given their potential impact on the future of the Australian currency amid currently volatile global conditions.
