Autonomy in AI: The New Sovereignty Frontier for Europe

Christine Lagarde highlighted the risk of excessive reliance on external AI for Europe, emphasizing the need to develop local technologies. Rapid adoption of AI can positively transform public finances but requires European computing capacity and locally adapted models.

Christine Lagarde’s recent warning about the increasing risk of excessive dependence on external artificial intelligence (AI) calls for attention. Historically a leader in innovation and technology, Europe now faces a significant challenge: how to become independent in AI production, avoiding the vulnerability brought by imported technology. According to Lagarde, within a few years, AI will be ubiquitous across all economic and social spheres of European life—from border inspection to train dispatching and patient monitoring. The ability to instantly access American AI, for instance, makes European systems vulnerable to potential disruptions that could have profoundly negative implications for various sectors.
