BC Tightens Controls on Virtual Assets with New Fraud Prevention Measures
The Brazilian Central Bank introduced new regulations to prevent fraud in virtual assets transactions, including temporary retention of funds over US$10,000. This move strengthens Brazil's financial system and aligns with global trends towards stricter cryptoasset regulation.
The Brazilian Central Bank (BC) recently approved a new resolution that introduces additional measures to prevent fraud in the virtual assets market. The BCB 584, published on August 7th, expands existing requirements and implements an innovative mechanism: temporary retention of assets for up to 24 hours in significant transactions. This initiative aims to strengthen financial system controls amid the global rise of cryptocurrencies and stablecoins, which have often been used in fraudulent activities. The temporary retention seeks to reduce opportunities for fraudulently obtained funds to be swiftly converted into digital assets and transferred to environments difficult to trace. Aligning with international trends towards stricter regulation in this sector, the measure highlights the importance of balancing financial innovation with investor protection. New rules apply to transactions over US$10,000 or deemed high-risk by each provider of virtual asset services (PSAV), indicating an adaptive approach based on specific risk assessments. This initiative reinforces Brazil's position as a responsible player in the global crypto-assets environment, aiming to protect both financial institutions and end-users from potential risks associated with increased digital asset usage.
