Bitcoin as a Solution for Economies Under Stress
A Cornell University study shows that Bitcoin is frequently used by users in unstable economies like El Salvador, Venezuela, and Nigeria. It serves primarily as an alternative to inefficient or unreliable traditional banking systems.
A recent study by Cornell University, published on Bitcoin Magazine, highlights the practical adoption of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin in unstable economies. The research surveyed 25,880 individuals globally, with notable focus on countries such as El Salvador, Venezuela, and Nigeria where economic instability and access to traditional banking services are more pronounced. In these contexts, Bitcoin is not merely seen as a speculative investment but as an effective transaction and value storage method during challenging times. According to the report, 58% of respondents were unaware that Bitcoin's total supply is capped at 21 million coins. Nevertheless, this lack of knowledge does not deter its use as a viable alternative. A Venezuelan respondent highlighted: 'Bitcoin is faster, cleaner, and less risky than other methods for obtaining dollars in my country.' This study underscores global trends where cryptocurrencies offer an alternative to traditional financial systems during crises, contributing to investment diversification and global transactional options.
