Bitcoin Holds Ground Despite Rate Hike
Grayscale suggests that recent interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve are unlikely to significantly impact the cryptocurrency market in the near future, as they represent a mid-cycle adjustment rather than a structural change.
On May 25, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates to combat inflation. This move initially caused volatility in the bitcoin market but quickly settled back to its previous levels. Grayscale argues that this decision is unlikely to have a significant impact on the crypto market over the coming months. According to Zach Pandl, head of research at Grayscale, the policy change represents a mid-cycle adjustment rather than a cyclical shift. He suggests that one or two additional rate hikes in 2026 are not expected to significantly alter capital allocation patterns. Bitcoin has historically performed well in low-interest-rate environments as an alternative to traditional investment options with lower returns. However, when the Fed accelerated interest rate increases last year to curb inflation, it negatively affected the value of this digital asset. In that sense, Pandl draws a parallel to 1997, when a single Federal Reserve rate hike did not impede the tech market's growth. Currently, bitcoin is trading at around $76,581, up 18% over the past 30 days, largely due to expanded Treasury liquidity-support operations.
