BOJ Accelerates Path to Rate Hike
Economists now expect a key interest rate hike by Japan's central bank in September, signaling increased pressure on the yen and uncertainties surrounding Japanese fiscal policy.
A Reuters poll has revealed a significant shift in the expectations of economists, with 57% now forecasting that Japan’s central bank (BOJ) will raise its key rate to 1.25% in September. This marks a substantial increase compared to just 5% in July's survey. The trajectory for interest rates is expected to be earlier than anticipated, with most respondents pointing towards a peak between 1.50% and 2.0%, contingent on political resolutions. The BOJ raised its key rate to the highest level in 30 years at 1% last month, yet persisting pressure on the yen raises questions about whether a single-minded adjustment of interest rates will suffice. The unsuccessful coordinated intervention between Japan and the United States in the previous month also adds to this uncertainty, suggesting that the yen remains vulnerable even with more aggressive monetary measures. This unidirectional rate adjustment has potential market volatility implications, not only for the yen but also for other East Asian currencies linked to its performance.
