Brazil and Europe Unite in Instant Payment Revolution: A Transatlantic Partnership?
Brazil and Europe are poised to advance instant payment technology through a partnership interlinking Brazil’s Pix system with TIPS in Europe, aiming to make international transactions quicker and more efficient.
In the ever-evolving global landscape, instant payment technology has emerged as a key pillar of modern financial innovation. Recent advancements in this field have been witnessed on both ends of the Atlantic: Brazil and Europe. The Brazilian Central Bank (BC) and the European Central Bank (BCE) officially announced on September 24 their intention to establish a partnership that will enable interconnection between Pix, the Brazilian instant payment system, and TARGET Instant Payment Settlement (TIPS), the European platform for immediate payments. This initiative transcends mere technological progress; it represents a strategic move aimed at strengthening global financial integration by promoting economic cooperation between the two continents and potentially reducing costs associated with international transactions. The Pix, managed by Brazil's BC, processes approximately 250 million transactions daily with real-time settlement in local currency. Meanwhile, TIPS allows for immediate liquidity of payments in European currencies such as the euro, Swedish krona, and Danish krone. This joint evaluation of these two platforms presents a unique opportunity to make international payments faster, more efficient, and accessible to both individuals and businesses on either side of the ocean.
