Brazilian Market Reacts to Fed Decision and Internal Pressures
The Ibovespa declined significantly after the Fed maintained interest rates despite three directors voting for a hike, coupled with poor performance from Banco Santander. While Vale experienced minor losses, Petrobras benefited from higher oil prices, but banks such as Itaú faced substantial declines.
The trading session on the Brazilian stock market on Wednesday saw a broad decline, with the Ibovespa closing at its lowest intraday level. The index lost 1.52%, settling at 173,885 points, amid an unexpected decision from the Federal Reserve (Fed) and poor performance from Banco Santander. With three directors voting for a rate hike despite the Fed's decision to maintain interest rates, there was an atmosphere of risk aversion towards the end of the trading session. Other banks also felt pressure, with Itaú Unibanco shares falling 2.43%. Vale and Petrobras had mixed results; while the former saw a modest decline of 0.85%, the latter benefited from higher oil prices. The market's behavior reflects ongoing global uncertainties, including geopolitical and economic risks related to sanctions against Iran and President Trump’s foreign policy statements.
