Brazilian Mining: Resource-Starved Agency May Halt Sector Growth
The National Mining Agency (ANM) faces a significant challenge with limited resources, threatening its ability to ensure safety and efficiency in Brazil's critical mining sector. The agency’s reliance on the Compensation Finance for Mineral Exploration (Cfem) highlights the need for budget reallocation to maintain operational effectiveness.
The National Mining Agency (ANM) is grappling with a critical resource shortage that threatens its ability to ensure safety and efficiency in the strategically important mining sector. The agency’s primary funding source, the Compensation Finance for Mineral Exploration (Cfem), has left it struggling to meet essential functions. Experts argue that ANM requires adequate budget reallocation to fulfill its mandate without major constraints. The drastic reduction in the budget from R$700 million in 2021 to just R90 million this year raises significant concerns about the agency's capacity to carry out on-site inspections and other crucial activities. The decrease in mine safety inspections, for instance, could jeopardize environmental security and mining operations nationwide.
