Diplomatic Mediation or Excessive Caution? Iran’s Prudent Approach to Regional Negotiations

Iran expresses distrust towards regional mediation efforts aimed at facilitating negotiations with the United States, viewing them as potential American traps. This cautious approach may negatively impact its already weakened economy.

Recent efforts by regional mediators, such as Pakistan and Oman, to facilitate dialogue between Tehran and Washington have sparked significant distrust among Iranian officials. According to the influential Kayhan newspaper, these initiatives are seen as American maneuvers aimed at deceiving Iran. The history of simultaneous attacks by Israel and the United States during previous negotiations has fueled this mistrust. For Kayhan, any pause in sanctions or lifting of blockades must be met with a strong response from Iranian authorities, including the release of frozen funds and complete renunciation of international sanctions. This cautious stance has direct implications for Iran’s economy, which has faced significant economic pressures since 2015 due to the nuclear deal. Iran needs to carefully balance its military power with economic necessities in the global market. The hesitation to advance on diplomacy could hamper economic recovery, limiting Iran's ability to import essential goods and invest in critical infrastructure. Source: Middle East Eye
