Dubai Lifts Travel Ban on Lakhani After UK Fraud Conviction

Dubai lifted the travel ban on Muhammad Tahir Lakhani and his son after a petition, allowing them to resume their commercial activities in the Emirate. Convicted of fraud in 2024, this decision opens new negotiation paths with creditors worried about potential flight back to Pakistan.

In a recent development in the business landscape of the UAE, the Dubai court has lifted the travel ban imposed on British-Pakistani shipping tycoon Muhammad Tahir Lakhani and his son. This decision followed a petition by the family which argued for the need to maintain their commercial activities within the region. In 2024, both were convicted in London of fraud involving false representations made to secure a US$ 45 million loan for Astir Maritime, a company owned primarily by them and another family member. Although the case is yet to be fully resolved, the lifting of the travel ban paves new paths for negotiations between the Lakhani family and their creditors, who expressed concerns about potential flight back to Pakistan. The Dubai court’s decision reflects the delicate balance between maintaining international financial market integrity and supporting global businesses operating across multiple jurisdictions.
