ECB: Is It Peak or the Beginning of a New Phase?
The ECB's interest rate hike today may indicate a peak, but projections for economic growth could point towards further tightening. Analysts anticipate vague signals from Lagarde and that staff forecasts might suggest additional hikes are likely.
Today's ECB interest rate decision is expected to see a 25 basis point hike, taking the deposit facility rate to 2.50%. However, market interest lies not in this move itself but in what guidance Lagarde will provide. With oil prices climbing back up to $100 and bond yields rising, there's much debate on whether today’s hike is a peak or the start of further tightening. Despite analysts expecting vague signals from ECB President Lagarde, projections for economic growth could be crucial. Barclays anticipates the September move as an appropriate response to current inflation risks without adding any 'insurance' hikes. Danske Bank similarly expects Lagarde to reiterate the ECB's meeting-by-meeting and data-dependent approach rather than provide specific forward guidance. JP Morgan, however, believes that updated staff forecasts may instead make a stronger case for further rate increases. Despite these perspectives, Barclays and Danske still see 2.50% as potentially the peak of the hike cycle. The key question is whether this guidance will provide clear enough foresight about future monetary policy or if the ECB will maintain flexibility to respond to economic shocks.
