FX Option Expirations: Limited Impact Until U.S. Employment Report
On Thursday, significant option expirations for currency pairs like EUR/USD will occur at 10 am ET. However, given the current market conditions and pending U.S. non-farm payrolls data, their impact is expected to be limited.
On Thursday, August 7th, at 10 am ET, there will be significant option expirations for certain currency pairs, notably the EUR/USD around the 1.1500 level. These expirations may have a marginal impact on the foreign exchange markets, but given that the pair is confined within a tight range (only 7 pips today) and awaiting the U.S. non-farm payrolls report, their influence will likely be limited. A rebound below the 100-hour moving average at 1.1529 would keep things in check, especially as the pair has not managed to test the more resistant 100-day moving average level of 1.1567. The expirations could provide a floor for any downward price extensions during the session ahead, but the focus remains on the technical levels above. Post-Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) report, the 200-hour moving average at 1.1488 will become a focal point instead. Dollar sentiment is still key, with traders slowly regaining confidence to push USD/JPY higher again. This means that intervention risks will remain a consideration as the week draws to a close. Additionally, there’s an expiry for EUR/GBP around the 0.8550 level, but given the expected calmer market sentiment in European trading ahead of the non-farm payrolls data release, this is unlikely to have any significant impact on the pair. Hence, these expiration events are likely to be relatively uneventful until we get the U.S. employment report.
