Generation Z and the Electric Vehicle Revolution: A Market Analysis

Generation Z in the United States is increasingly interested in electric vehicles and Chinese brands due to their affordability, with 69% considering such purchases. The increase in import tariffs to 100% restricts these brands' entry into the American market, but President Trump signaled that there would be no issues with Chinese companies manufacturing cars in the U.S.

In recent years, electric vehicles have been gaining ground in the global automotive market. According to a study by Cox Automotive, 69% of Generation Z drivers in the United States are considering purchasing cars from Chinese manufacturers such as BYD and Geely. This demographic group makes up about one-fifth of American consumers and is crucial for future trends in this sector. The primary factor influencing this generation is affordability; with new vehicle prices in the U.S. averaging around US$ 50,000, and rising fuel costs further increasing operational expenses, affordable electric vehicles from China have gained attention due to their low initial purchase and maintenance costs. However, entry into the American market by these Chinese brands is limited by a 100% import tariff. Recently, President Donald Trump signaled that there would be no problems with Chinese companies manufacturing cars in the U.S., despite internal opposition. The issue of affordability has also emerged in the semiconductor industry, where global spending on memory chips is projected to increase sixfold from historical averages over the next two decades, significantly impacting the global economy and influencing Generation Z’s consumption decisions. While these Chinese brands pose a threat to American automotive industries, low costs could be a decisive factor for younger consumers. Source: Valor Econômico
