Gold's Quandary: Persistent Inflation and Rising Rates Challenge the Safe Haven

Gold declined as market expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike intensified, driven by perceptions of persistent U.S. inflation. The PPI reading and surging oil prices, due to supply constraints and geopolitical tensions, reinforced the view of tighter monetary policy, diminishing the precious metal's appeal.

The precious metals market felt the weight of macroeconomic uncertainties this Thursday, with gold futures recording a significant decline. The performance of the yellow metal, traditionally a safe haven during turbulent times, was directly impacted by investors' growing conviction that the Federal Reserve (Fed) is likely to further raise interest rates at its upcoming meeting. This shift in expectations reflects a re-evaluation of the inflationary landscape, which appears more resilient than anticipated.

The primary driving force behind this re-evaluation is the recent reading of the U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI). Although in line with projections, the data contributed to the perception that the disinflation process, once seen as a clear path, may have stalled. Additionally, the escalation in oil prices added an extra layer of inflationary concern. Reaching levels above three digits, the appreciation of oil was driven by reports of Saudi production at its lowest level since 1990 and by geopolitical tensions in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, which hinder crude oil outflow.

These developments combined to solidify expectations for a more aggressive stance from the Fed. Data from the CME Group reveal a notable jump in projections for rate hikes, rising from 61.2% to 70% in a single day. In an environment of higher interest rates, gold, which offers no yield, loses some of its appeal compared to assets that remunerate capital. The market now turns its attention to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to be released this Friday, which will serve as a final gauge for the American central bank's monetary policy decision and for the trajectory of global assets.
