Government Launches New Private Railway Program Focused on Future Mobility
The government is launching a new private railway program aimed at leveraging economic and technological opportunities. The authorization model offers greater freedom to private companies with longer terms and fewer bureaucratic constraints.
The federal government, through the Ministry of Transport, is planning to inject new life into the national railway sector via a model of authorization that offers significant private investment opportunities. The first launch will be in December with the Corredor Minas-Rio project. This approach aligns with global trends toward decentralization and privatization of transportation services. The authorization regime represents a robust bet on full responsibility by private companies, offering longer exploration periods (99 years) and fewer bureaucratic constraints compared to traditional concessions. Companies can assume investment risks but also substantial gains through greater outorga. The ministry’s mapping, which analyzed 10,000 km of abandoned railways, identified vast potential for renewal and sustainable development, including passenger and cargo projects. Successful implementation could not only revitalize Brazil's railway sector but also strengthen the country’s transportation infrastructure in a competitive global landscape.
