Ibovespa Defies Global Headwinds: Sectoral Recovery Drives Eighth Consecutive Gain

The Ibovespa concluded a volatile session with its eighth consecutive gain, driven by Petrobras and banks, despite concerns over the Fed's "hawkish" stance at Jackson Hole. Expectations for a U.S. rate hike increased, but the Brazilian market demonstrated sectoral resilience, consolidating a 2.71% weekly gain.

The Brazilian stock market demonstrated remarkable resilience in a session marked by significant fluctuations, culminating in the Ibovespa's eighth consecutive day of gains. After an intensely volatile day, B3's main index managed to reverse initial losses to close up 0.30%, reaching 175,665 points. This performance solidified a weekly gain of 2.71%, signaling persistent buying strength, even in a trading environment with lower-than-usual liquidity.

The morning was dominated by concerns over global monetary policy. Statements deemed more "hawkish" by Federal Reserve President Kevin Warsh during the Jackson Hole symposium rekindled expectations of a U.S. interest rate hike as early as the September meeting. The futures market, according to CME Group data, now prices a 57.5% probability of monetary tightening, a considerable jump from the 35.4% recorded the previous day. This scenario of higher U.S. interest rates tends to pressure emerging market assets by making dollar-denominated investments more attractive.

However, the local market showed a capacity for recovery in the afternoon. The reversal of losses was largely driven by the robust performance of key economic sectors. Petrobras preferred shares, for instance, recorded a gain of 1.99%, while the banking sector also showed a predominantly positive performance, highlighted by a 1.83% rise in Santander units. This sectoral strength, combined with a reduction in local risk premiums ahead of the weekend, allowed the Ibovespa to overcome the initial impact of external news. In contrast, Vale shares registered a slight decrease of 0.67%.

The observed dynamic reflects the complex interaction between global macroeconomic factors and domestic specificities. While the Fed's tougher stance on combating inflation continues to be a vector of uncertainty for global markets, the Ibovespa's ability to absorb this shock and find support in specific sectors demonstrates a certain selectivity among investors. The reduced liquidity, noted during the session, may have amplified some of these intraday movements, but the upward trend held, indicating that risk appetite for Brazilian assets was not entirely dampened by the prospect of higher U.S. interest rates.
