India has announced a new export credit line worth 48.5 billion rupees for the Republic of Maldives, aimed at financing development projects and bolstering bilateral trade relations. This agreement underscores the growing importance of the Maldives as a key partner in regional economic stability and sustainable growth.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently announced a new long-term export credit program in favor of the Government of the Republic of Maldives, amounting to 48.5 billion Indian rupees. This agreement, effective from August 27, 2026, reflects increasing economic interactions between the subcontinent and Southeast Asian nations such as the Maldives. The primary purpose of this Line of Credit (LOC) is to finance various development projects in the country, promoting technical and financial cooperation between both nations. According to the terms of the agreement, at least 75% of costs for works and services will be provided by Indian companies, while the remainder can be sourced internationally. This initiative aims to strengthen bilateral trade relations and boost local Maldivian economic development through foreign direct investment. The agreement also allows for the export of Indian goods and services under the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) regulations of India. Such a move represents an important step in strengthening regional economic relations in Asia. Expanding the export credit program reflects the increasing importance of the Maldives as a commercial partner and strategic ally, contributing to regional stability and sustainable development in the Indian Ocean.
