Last week, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) conducted an auction for the conversion/troca of Indian government securities. This operation involved four different pairs with varying maturities, aiming to optimize the public debt structure and adjust financing costs in light of the current global economic landscape. The total volume of these operations reached INR 238 billion, reflecting a high level of investor interest in reconfiguring their positions in India’s government bond market.

In detail, the first series involved swapping the 6.79% GS 2027 and 6.64% GS 2027 with 6.19% GS 2034 and 6.67% GS 2035 respectively. The total offers amounted to INR 180.6 billion, with an acceptance of INR 146.9 billion, indicating strong demand for long-term bonds. The second series involved swapping the 8.60% GS 2028 and 7.37% GS 2028, 7.10% GS 2029, and 7.88% GS 2030 with their respective 7.50% GS 2034, 6.64% GS 2035, and 6.64% GS 2035 and 7.10% GS 2034 counterparts, totaling an acceptance of INR 51.4 billion.

These operations underscore the importance of maintaining a well-balanced public debt structure that considers both financing costs and future economic outlooks. In the current global scenario marked by uncertainties and high interest rates, these actions can assist in managing currency risk and sustaining fiscal balance for the country.
