Inflation on the Rise: Food and Oil's Impact in India
India recorded a significant rise in August 2023 with CPI at 4.82% year-over-year, primarily driven by food inflation and rising oil prices. The RBI faces challenges managing this trend, especially given its target for core inflation, while markets anticipate an interest rate hike.
India witnessed a new high for inflation in August 2023, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising to 4.82% year-over-year, up from 4.45% in July. The primary driver of this increase is food inflation, which surged by 5.95% compared to the same period last year. Rural and urban inflation also contributed with rates of 5.23% and 4.31%, respectively. While headline inflation remains within the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) tolerance band between 2% and 6%, the composition of this rise poses a significant challenge for monetary policy, particularly due to food inflation and rising oil prices. The latter raises concerns about increased costs in transportation and fuel across the economy. Given recent spikes in international crude prices, this issue has become more pressing. The RBI maintains a neutral stance but market expectations point towards an interest rate hike at their next meeting in October. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra highlighted that the bank prioritizes headline inflation over core inflation, which is seen as a measure of underlying price pressures.
