Interest Rate Cuts and Inflation Challenges in Brazil: A Complex Scenario
With an unexpected deflation in August’s CPI, possibilities for further interest rate cuts by the Central Bank arise. However, decisions will depend on GDP numbers and persistent inflationary pressures.
The August National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) showed an unexpected deflation, with the rate dropping to -0.32%, mainly due to temporary energy price effects. This scenario paves the way for potential interest rate cuts by the Central Bank, which will be discussed in today's meeting. However, the Federal Reserve is expected to raise rates by 0.25 percentage points, affecting global and local markets. Brazil’s economy faces significant challenges with a decelerated GDP growth of 0.5% in the second quarter, reflecting reduced household consumption and service sector activity. While the IPCA has decreased to 4.22% year-over-year, core inflation remains high, indicating persistent market pressure. Low unemployment rates and increased salary expansions will sustain demand despite higher interest rates, which are expected to dampen prices more slowly.
