Is It Time for Yen Intervention?
The USD/JPY pair has reached historical highs without justifying MOF intervention due to low volatility levels. This indicates a cautious approach from the Japanese authorities towards potential market shifts.
Over the past months, the USD/JPY pair has reached historical highs, with the US dollar hitting levels not seen since 1986. This gradual and controlled movement is driven by factors such as escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. However, Japanese financial authorities appear cautious in responding with intervention measures. According to a report from MUFG, the current scenario does not warrant proactive actions from the Ministry of Finance (MOF). The low level of volatility in the USD/JPY pair has been a key factor behind this stance. Implied volatility dropped below 6% for the first time since February 2022, indicating some normalization in the market. Even with verbal interventions from government officials, such as Finance Minister Katayama who blamed the situation in the Middle East for the weakening of the yen, expectations of imminent intervention remain limited. This scenario may indicate a resigned acceptance by the Japanese authorities regarding the gradual devaluation of the yen, provided that the exchange rate continues to rise moderately.
