Job Market Preview: The August Edition

The August non-farm payrolls report is crucial for financial markets, potentially impacting economic expectations based on its outcome. The volatility of USD/JPY and the stagnation in US labor force participation are significant points of interest.

The financial markets are eagerly awaiting the August edition of non-farm payrolls, which is scheduled for release next Friday. USD/JPY remains volatile after moving more than 100 pips away from yesterday's low point. The euro has declined by two pips to 1.1622. In fixed income markets, yields on 2-year US Treasuries have increased by two basis points to reach the day’s high of 4.35%. Federal Reserve President James Bullard emphasized that a good employment report will not alter his economic outlook. However, the stagnation in labor force participation at 61.4% is a long-term concern for the US economy and warrants continued market scrutiny. The Bank of Canada (BoC) maintained its interest rates this week and expects further rate hikes by year-end. With recent employment data showing improvement, the potential impact of the USMCA agreement later this month will be closely watched. Nevertheless, July’s positive reading of 75.1K job openings provides ample room for a miss in today's report without necessitating an economic reassessment.
