Kenya’s Tax Management Challenges and Foreign Investment Implications
The World Bank has highlighted challenges in Kenya’s tax management, particularly delays in VAT refund procedures, as a major obstacle for attracting foreign direct investment and driving economic growth.
According to recent assessments by the World Bank on Kenya's fiscal situation, there is significant concern regarding tax management. Sources from international economic circles highlight that delays in VAT (Value Added Tax) refund processes have been a major obstacle for attracting direct foreign investment into the country. This issue is not isolated and reflects broader trends across East Africa, where improved fiscal efficiency has emerged as a priority to attract foreign capital and drive sustainable economic growth. The World Bank suggests that improvements in this area could catalyze an increase of approximately 20 billion shillings (Sh195 billion) in investments, a substantial amount for the Kenyan economy, stimulating production and employment across various industrial sectors. However, it is crucial that Kenyan authorities implement effective measures not only to expedite these processes but also to ensure their transparency and continuous efficiency to attract foreign investment and strengthen the country's financial markets.
