Market Evolution and the Resilience of U.S. Economy
UBS suggests that the Federal Reserve's upcoming interest rate hikes will be driven by a strong U.S. economy, remaining favorable to equities despite mild inflationary pressures. The bank highlights sectors like AI, power, and natural resources as attractive options during this monetary adjustment cycle.
Recent economic data from the United States, including strong employment figures and mild inflationary pressures, have raised questions about the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) next moves. In its recent report, UBS distinguished between scenarios where interest rate hikes are driven by a robust economy and those where they are fueled by rising inflation. The latter would be concerning for investors, while the former remains favorable to equities, especially in sectors related to artificial intelligence (AI), power, and natural resources.
UBS’s analysis suggests a cautious stance on Treasury bonds and the U.S. dollar but maintains a positive outlook on the stock market. With 162,000 new jobs added in August, the strong employment figures reinforce the idea of a gradual increase in interest rates being conducive to economic stability. However, investors should remain vigilant regarding inflationary dynamics, especially after the Consumer Price Index (CPI) exceeded expectations in July.
UBS’s view is that a more hawkish Fed stance indicates a robust economy, which is positive for financial markets. This contrasts with scenarios where interest rate hikes reflect deteriorating economic conditions.
