New Strategy for Rural Cooperative Banks: Flexibility and Prudential Limits
The RBI has announced new guidelines for concentration risk management in rural cooperative banks, introducing flexibility in mortgage decisions and prudential limits on unsecured advances. The measure seeks to modernize regulation, adapting it to local needs while maintaining financial security.
In its recent update to concentration risk management guidelines, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced a more flexible approach for rural cooperative banks. This change aligns with global trends that seek greater efficiency and financial responsibility. The new strategy aims to allow larger rural cooperative banks, with deposits above 10 billion rupees, to determine the duration and moratorium periods on mortgages according to their specific needs. Additionally, prudential limits for unsecured advances have been established, while sectoral exposure limits, except for real estate, are being withdrawn. This approach seeks to balance financial security with operational capacity of banks, enabling them to better respond to local market demands, particularly in the housing and other lending sectors.
