Nubank Expands Horizons: Opportunities Abroad Without Sacrificing Efficiency

Nubank plans to enter the U.S. market without compromising current efficiency levels, focusing on establishing a significant presence rather than dominating the market immediately. The expansion aims to leverage unique opportunities for an efficient bank like Nubank in the American market, where five to ten million customers could be considered a substantial achievement.

The Brazilian digital finance giant, Nubank, has announced plans to enter the U.S. market in the near future. According to its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Rob Livingston, this expansion will not compromise the company's current efficiency levels, ensuring that its efficiency index remains stable or minimally altered over the next two years. In Q1 2026, Nubank’s efficiency index stood at 17.6%, a highly competitive level in the digital finance industry. Livingston highlighted that the focus is on establishing a significant presence in the U.S. without necessarily dominating the market immediately. He stressed that five to ten million customers could be seen as a substantial achievement for the institution.

For Livingston, entering the American market offers unique opportunities for an efficient bank like Nubank. Given the size and diversity of the country, he argues that achieving five to ten million clients would have significant impact. 'Five million, 10 million customers in the U.S. are as big as another country for Nu, and we would be thrilled to make a difference in their financial lives,' said Livingston. This strategy reflects a more holistic view of global markets, where each market is seen as a territory with its own potential.

This international expansion comes at a time when Brazil and the U.S. are becoming increasingly interconnected economically, with digital finance gaining prominence worldwide. Nubank’s decision to diversify into new markets is a strategic response to this global trend, aimed at consolidating its position both in Brazil and the United States.
