Nucor Surpasses Estimates, But Shares Underreact to Good News

Nucor exceeded expectations with its financial results, driven by strong demand and reduced import competition due to Section 232 tariffs. However, market reaction was muted, indicating cautious investor sentiment regarding future projections.

Nucor (NYSE: NUE) has recently reported financial results that surpassed market expectations. With an adjusted earnings per share of $4.84 compared to the anticipated $4.38 and a revenue of $10.4 billion against the expected $10.14 billion, the company's performance was robust. Leon Topalian, Nucor’s Chair and CEO, attributes this success to strong demand in key sectors of the U.S. economy, coupled with supportive federal trade policies. The steel mill shipments set a second consecutive record quarter, driving segment pre-tax earnings up to $1.56 billion from $1.13 billion in Q1, on the back of record quarterly shipments (7.1 million tons) and sequential average external pricing increases by 7%. Nucor's own trade flow data shows that finished carbon and alloy steel import market share fell to approximately 16% in H1 2026 from 21% in 2025 and 23% in 2024. This reflects the intended effect of Section 232 tariffs, with year-over-year declines in imports of 40%, corrosion-resistant sheet by 36%, and coiled plate by 42%. The robust demand for infrastructure data centers, grid buildout, advanced manufacturing, and energy infrastructure is clearly evident. However, despite the strong performance, Nucor's stock reacted minimally to this news, with shares down only 0.2% after-hours. This suggests that investors have already factored much of the positive outlook into their current valuations.
