Post-Brexit Compliance Challenges: UK’s Lost EU Trade Value of Up to £6.5 Billion
The UK is losing up to £6.5 billion annually in EU exports due to mismatched testing standards, particularly impacting automotive parts, electronics, and pharmaceuticals.
The United Kingdom is losing out on annual exports worth up to £6.5 billion in the European Union (EU) due to mismatched testing standards, according to a study by the IPPR (Institute for Public Policy Research). This significant economic impact is particularly felt in sectors such as automotive parts, electronics, and pharmaceuticals, where companies are either abandoning EU markets or setting up subsidiaries within the bloc. Specifically, UK automotive and part exports could be £2.48 billion to £3.42 billion higher each year without these barriers. The electronic sector may see an increase of between £1.17 billion and £1.67 billion, while the pharmaceutical industry might experience a rise in annual sales between £740 million and £820 million. These findings highlight how regulatory misalignment can pose significant challenges to international trade post-Brexit, directly affecting the UK’s national income.
