Qatar Calls for Diversification of Strategic Alliances, Minimizing Dependence on US
Qatar is emphasizing the need for diversification of strategic alliances and minimizing dependence on the United States amid increasing regional tensions, especially in light of Iranian retaliation and Haines' concerns about reduced US presence.
During the Hili Forum 2026 in Abu Dhabi, Majed al-Ansari, the spokesperson for Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the need to diversify strategic alliances and reduce dependence solely on the United States to ensure regional security. Host to the largest American military base in the Arab world, Qatar has been the target of direct retaliation from Iran since February 2026 following a regional war initiated by Washington and Tel Aviv against Tehran. Al-Ansari stated that while maintaining international forces and strategic alliances with the US is crucial, it is not sufficient for Qatari security needs. 'We need to recognize in the region that having foreign military presence and a strategic alliance with the United States is essential but not enough. Self-sufficiency when it comes to security is the only way forward,' he said during the Abu Dhabi conference. These remarks come amid Avril Haines, former US Director of National Intelligence, warning that reducing American footprint in the region could lead to more instability and problems. The recent evacuation of thousands of American military personnel and diplomatic staff from the Gulf highlights the growing regional tensions, particularly with Iran.
