Real vs. Dollar: Fiscal Outlook Shapes Currency Prospects

Goldman Sachs forecasts that the real's value could range from below R$4.35 to nearly R$5.80 against the U.S. dollar, depending on the outcome of upcoming Brazilian elections and fiscal reforms.

The Brazilian economy is under intense scrutiny from international financial institutions, particularly regarding its national currency, the real. According to Goldman Sachs, the real's performance could mirror that of Colombia’s peso following presidential elections in that country. If fiscal consolidation efforts are successful and supported by a favorable external environment, the real might trade below R$4.35 against the U.S. dollar. However, without these reforms, there is a high likelihood of further depreciation to around R$5.80. Goldman Sachs' senior currency strategist, Teresa Alves, highlights that fiscal conditions significantly impact currency performance in emerging markets such as Brazil.
