Reversal in USDCAD: Impact of Interest Rates and Technical Resistance

The USDCAD pair experienced a reversal after two consecutive days of decline, reflecting movements in interest rates and intervention speculations. Technical resistance remains near key moving averages levels.

The foreign exchange market witnessed a significant reversal in the USDCAD pair. After two consecutive days of decline, today saw a recovery that reflects the strong movement in interest rates. Recent U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) data and Federal Reserve decisions have been pivotal in this context, influencing both the dollar's strength and the Canadian dollar’s reaction. The rise in Treasury yields—6.2 basis points for short-term and 6.7 basis points for long-term—played a crucial role today. This movement came after a week of speculation about potential intervention against the JPY that led to general U.S. dollar weakness yesterday. However, today's move reflects more directly on the Federal Reserve's influence through interest rate actions and their global impact. Technical resistance still exists near the 100-hour moving average at approximately 1.4071, with the 200-hour moving average acting as an additional barrier. For buyers to regain control, it would be necessary to surpass these critical levels and maintain them over time. This possibility could reinvigorate the recent upward trend, with investors focusing on this week's peak near 1.4130, which also marks the upper boundary of a key range between 1.41297 and 1.41488. On the other hand, technical resistance persists as sellers still need to push the rates below recent levels of 1.4003 and 1.3990 to finally break through the critical level at 1.39812. Only the achievement of these objectives will provide a clear return to the global upward trend in USDCAD.
