Rio Mais Concessionaire Enters Judicial Reorganization: Impact on Rio de Janeiro’s Economy
Rio Mais concessionaire has entered judicial reorganization after accumulating a significant debt with the Caixa Econômica Federal. The macroeconomic scenario, marked by local and national post-Olympics recessions as well as pandemic-related impacts, contributed to this situation.
The concessionaire Rio Mais, which was responsible for the construction and maintenance of the Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca during the 2016 Rio Olympics, has officially entered judicial reorganization. According to a decision by Judge Simone Gastesi Chevrand, the companies involved - Rio Mais, Lagoa da Barra Construções e Incorporações, and Parque da Lagoa Desenvolvimento Imobiliário - have accumulated a debt of R$ 7.518 billion. Approximately 95% of this debt is owed to the Caixa Econômica Federal. This move comes at a time when the macroeconomic scenario in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil's real estate sector has been adversely affected by local and national recessions post-Olympics, as well as global pandemic-related impacts that significantly reduced demand for large-scale construction projects and tourism infrastructure. The decision reflects the challenges faced by the Brazilian construction industry, where many companies are struggling to adapt to new economic realities, especially in regions heavily reliant on public sector funding for project execution.
