Rising Expectations for Rate Hike Pressures US Stock Markets

A robust U.S. employment report has raised expectations of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve next month, pressuring U.S. stock markets. The Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq are operating in negative territory, with only industrial and technology sectors showing minor gains.

This Friday, stock markets in New York are facing negative pressures following a robust reading of the U.S. employment report. According to the Department of Labor, the American labor market created 162 thousand jobs in August, surpassing the average estimate of 53 thousand jobs among economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal. This number represents a significant improvement compared to previous months and reaffirms sustained economic growth within the country despite ongoing global concerns. The news was accompanied by an increase in U.S. Treasury yields, reflecting growing expectations for a rate hike by the Federal Reserve (Fed) next month. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, traders now attribute 60.2% chances of a 0.25 percentage point rate hike at the upcoming central bank meeting. This rise in monetary policy adjustment expectations could pressure stock markets as immediate hikes may reduce the value of companies valued based on future earnings multiples. However, analysts note that the more detailed reading of the employment report suggests a less rapid growth pace in private sector job creation, with sectors like healthcare contributing little to the overall advance. This nuance could be relevant for understanding long-term economic implications. The industrial and technology sectors are the only ones showing slight gains, keeping the S&P 500 and Nasdaq above their negative lines.
