Rising Long-Term Debt Costs: A Global Perspective

Long-term debt costs in the United States have surged to historic levels due to global competition and investor concerns over the health of developed bond markets. Higher incentives are needed to attract investors.

In recent months, the cost of long-term debt in the United States has reached levels not seen in decades. According to Ira Jersey, chief US interest rate strategist at Bloomberg Intelligence, part of this increase is attributed to intense competition from other countries, particularly Japan. Jersey and Davide Barbuscia, both from Bloomberg, highlight that investors are concerned about the health of developed bond markets and require higher incentives to invest in U.S. bonds. Additionally, Barbuscia notes that corporate bond issuance has been unprecedentedly high so far in 2026.
