Rising Rates: A Global Challenge for Brazil
The rise of interest rates in the United States is creating a global challenge for Brazil, which will need to cope with higher costs for refinancing its public debt and finding new sources of external capital.
Recently, US Treasury bonds have experienced a significant rise in interest rates, with 30-year notes hitting yields above 5%, not seen since 2007. This global trend of rising interest rates is impacting the world economy and has direct consequences for countries like Brazil, which rely on external markets for public debt financing. Argentina, for instance, was already facing difficulties due to higher bond yields in the secondary market, while Japan and Europe have also witnessed increased capital costs. With a public debt estimated at around 82% of GDP, Brazil will need to adapt to a new scenario of more expensive funding. This means that public spending and fiscal policies must be reassessed to minimize the impact of rising interest rates on the cost of treasury operations, which are already burdened with the need to refinance US$10 trillion in debt by 2026. The pressure on global sovereign yields could worsen as governments face fiscal challenges and seek to finance their operations, posing new hurdles for emerging economies seeking external capital.
