The Era of Real Returns: Brazilian Investors in the Quest for Financial Efficiency
Over 60.6 million adults in Brazil are now active investors, showing increasing financial literacy and preference for real returns amid high interest rates and inflation. The internal rate of return (IRR) is crucial in assessing the efficiency of these investments.
By 2026, Brazil witnessed significant growth in individual and collective wealth with over 60.6 million adults now participating as investors. This expansion is not only due to a rise in active participants but also an improvement in financial literacy, which rose from 28% in 2021 to 43% by 2025. This trend reflects a clear preference for investments with higher returns and diversification over savings, as the latter declined from 75% to just 61%, while private securities gained prominence, rising from 8% to 20%. In this context, understanding not only nominal returns but also real returns is crucial in assessing wealth preservation. With high interest rates, such as the Selic at 14% per year and inflation near 4.5%, focusing on net yield becomes essential, which considers all associated costs. The internal rate of return (IRR) then becomes an indispensable tool for comparing different investments and evaluating the efficiency of these financial resources over time. This global trend towards real returns reflects investors' adaptation to a new economic reality where high real interest rates challenge traditional wealth accumulation strategies.
