The Illusion of Safety: Why Treasury Holdings Cannot Guarantee Stablecoin Stability During Liquidity Shocks

Experts warn that Treasury reserves, while creditworthily sound, may not protect stablecoins like Tether and Circle against sudden redemption runs. The risk stems from the mismatch between continuous digital withdrawal velocity and the operational capacity to liquidate assets in traditional markets, exposing structural vulnerabilities of crypto intermediaries integrated into the regulated financial system.

The cryptocurrency market exposes a fundamental tension between theoretical liquidity and practical liquidity management. When stablecoin issuers such as Tether and Circle hold reserves in U.S. Treasury bills (T-bills), they create what appears to be a safety buffer for users. However, risk structure experts identify a critical gap in this logic: high-quality assets on a balance sheet do not eliminate the possibility of sudden bank runs, where the speed of redemptions exceeds the operational capacity to convert assets into cash.
