The Unavoidable Fiscal Reality for Brazil Post-Elections

Brazil faces significant economic challenges post-elections due to budget deficits and high public debt, necessitating fiscal adjustments to stabilize the situation by 2035.

Brazil is set to face a critical economic challenge regardless of the upcoming presidential elections. Recent reports indicate an approximate budget deficit of 8.5% of GDP and a public debt approaching 81% of GDP, representing significant obstacles for economic recovery. These conditions imply constant increases in interest rates, making it even more difficult to attract private investments. To circumvent this reality, strategies such as freezing public sector hiring and containing mandatory expenditures below the nominal growth rate would be essential to stabilize the net debt by 2035. Such measures not only could reduce the burden of debt on the economy but also strengthen investor confidence, benefiting directly the exchange rate and inflation. Additionally, a sustainable primary surplus could trigger an economic stabilization trajectory, with net debt fixed around 68% of GDP by 2030. This analysis suggests that the upcoming elections will be not only a political milestone but also a crucial moment for Brazil's financial future. Source: Valor Econômico
