USDCAD at Crossroads: Buyers and Sellers in Tension
The USDCAD is at a crossroads with the support of its 200-hour moving average being tested. The FOMC decision today could be pivotal, along with broader market movements influencing the near-term outlook.
The Canadian dollar, represented by the USDCAD, finds itself at a critical technical juncture. Having dipped to a new session low of 1.4079, the pair is now focused on its 200-hour moving average (MA200), which stands at the same value. This level has served as a pivotal point in recent sessions, with buyers stepping in to reverse course after testing the MA200 last Friday. While there were instances where the decline was paused slightly above this level, sellers seem to be regaining momentum again. The immediate resistance is found on the 100-hour moving average (MA100) currently at 1.40958. If the price breaches this barrier, it would signal a near-term bullish bias and traders might target the former support that has now turned into resistance between 1.41297 and 1.41488. However, should the MA200 be broken, control would shift back to the sellers. The first objective would be the low from last week at 1.4055. A sustained move below this level would intensify downward momentum and open up possibilities near Monday’s low just above the key psychological level of 1.4000. Should sellers push through this, attention would turn to the 38.2% retracement of the rally from the May 1, 2026, low at 1.39812. The FOMC decision today at 2 PM could be pivotal in this scenario, with a market expectation of a 35% chance of rate hikes. Despite the downward movement in USDCAD, yields are on the rise, particularly for the two-year U.S. Treasury, which has climbed by 3 basis points to 4.307%. The 10-year yield is up 2.4 basis points at 4.628%. Equities are under pressure with the NASDAQ down 1% and the S&P -0.7%. The NASDAQ now below its 100-day moving average, while the S&P has crossed an upward sloping trend line (refer to today’s post for details). This market situation reflects a tension between buyers and sellers at a critical technical level with significant implications for the currency dynamic in the coming days.
